AI Safety: UK and US sign landmark agreement

The US and UK signed a landmark agreement to collaborate on AI safety testing and risk assessment. This is the first formal agreement of its kind globally. They will establish a researcher exchange program between their newly formed AI safety institutes and work together on evaluating private AI models.

UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Michelle Donelan said;

The work of our two nations in driving forward AI safety will strengthen the foundations we laid at Bletchley Park in November, and I have no doubt that our shared expertise will continue to pave the way for countries tapping into AI’s enormous benefits safely and responsibly.

United States Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo said:

By working together, we are furthering the long-lasting special relationship between the U.S. and UK and laying the groundwork to ensure that we’re keeping AI safe both now and in the future.

This partnership aims to proactively address potential risks from advanced AI, such as cyberattacks or bioweapons. While the US focuses on national security risks, the UK emphasizes broader societal risks. This agreement highlights the growing global focus on AI safety regulations.
